How to create a Paypal button
Note: You can click on the images for a larger view. The steps below marked (OPTIONAL) can be skipped.
1. Log in to your Paypal account.
2. Click on the 'Products & Services' tab and then click on the 'Website Payments Standard' link.
3. Click on the 'Create One Now' link under 'Create Payment Buttons for Your Website > Sell single items'
4. In Step 1:
- Enter Item Name (Your book title)
- If you plan to accept payments in only a single currency (e.g. Canadian dollar or US dollar or Euros), enter price here. If not, leave this field blank and click on 'Add dropdown with price option'.
- In the 'Name of dropdown menu' field, type "Choose shipping destination" and in Menu Option Name, type the various destinations (e.g. Canada, United States, All Other Countries) and the corresponding prices under the price column. Check to see the correct currency is selected.
5. (OPTIONAL) If you want to offer the option of mailing a signed copy from the author, click 'Add Text Field' and type in "Would you like a signed copy?"
6. (OPTIONAL) Click on 'Customize Appearance' to customize how the Paypal 'Buy Now' button appears. It's advisable to display the credit card logos.
7. (OPTIONAL) Shipping. It's best to work the shipping and handling costs into your displayed pricing, but if you don't, you can choose to add S&H costs here.
8. TAX: If you are eligible to collect taxes, enter info here; if not, leave blank.
9. IMPORTANT: Merchant ID: Keep the default 'Secure merchant account ID' checked on, to avoid the potential for spam. This ensures the email address associated with your Paypal account isn't shown.
10. There are no changes required in Step 2 of the Paypal page. In Step 3, click "Yes" against the question "Do you want to let your customer change order quantities?". For the other two questions ("Can your customer add special instructions?" and "Do you need the shipping address?"), ensure that the Yes boxes are checked, which they should be by default.
11. Click on Create Button.
12. You should now be on a new page, where the button code is displayed. On the right of the page, under Buyer's View, you can also see how the button will appear. Click on "Select Code and Copy" and paste the code into a text editor like Notepad (PC) or TextEdit (Mac). Do not use MS Word... it will mangle the code.
13. (OPTIONAL) If you have more than one book, you can create similar buttons a lot quicker. Click on "Go to my saved buttons" under Step 1 on the Paypal page and make changes to the book title and prices. Then you can click on Create Button again.
14. Log in to your website's administration backend, and navigate to the content item where you wish to add the Paypal button. (If the content still has to be created, click on Add New Article).
15. In the WYSIWYG editor's content area, type in all your book details, then click on the Edit Code icon (it looks like this:
). Don't get too scared, it's not as bad as it looks. Scroll right to the bottom of the popup window, and then paste the Paypal button code. Then click on Update.
16. If all has gone well, you should see the Paypal button in the WYSIWYG editor window. Click on Save on the top right of your screen and then preview your page in a new window.
